The punishment given to a contract soldier, Béla F., who participated in a riot on Blaha Lujza tér on the night between September 19 and 20 was reduced to one year from 18 months on Monday, reports fn.hu. In addition, he will not be banned from public affairs but demoted instead.

The Military Council of the Budapest Judgement Board (Fővárosi Ítélőtábla Katonai Tanácsa) based its decision on the facts that F. encouraged the group of rioters clashing with police and acted as a leader for them, however, he expressed regret in his confession and had no criminal history.

The judge added that the motion of F.'s attorney, who had asked for the punishment to be lessened to a suspended jail term, could not be accepted, as the defendant committed the crime as a contract soldier, and similar crimes had become more frequent recently. F.'s attorney had supported his motion by arguing that the defendant did not press charges against police officers who caused him serious injuries.

At Monday's hearing, it was also revealed that F.'s status as contract soldier has not been suspended, despite press reports.
